The main emphasis of my Ph.D. project is to investigate the epidemiology, genetics and pathology of young adults with colorectal cancer or appendiceal neoplasms under the supervision of Prof. Timothy J. Price who is the Head of Clinical Oncology Research at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woodville.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), bowel cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths with more than 5,300 individuals estimated to die from this disease in 2020. There has been a significant increase in the incidence of bowel cancer in young adults aged under 50 years over the past three decades without a clear explanation. In 2019, the AIHW has reported that bowel cancer was estimated to be the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in individuals aged 25 to 49 years and was the leading cancer diagnosed in women aged 10 to 15 years. There is a need to identify young individuals at increased risk for bowel cancer in the general population so that prevention strategies can be instituted.
