I am passionate about conducting qualitative research that generates practical outcomes related to the provision of health care. My research expertise involves exploring the experiences and perspective of receiver and providers of healthcare, as well as examining, through Conversation Analysis, the ways in which health care and advice are delivered in real-life, naturally occurring interactions. I use these approaches within my current postdoctoral research, which focuses on improving the delivery of fundamental nursing care within acute healthcare systems.

My research focuses on the ways in which people use and engage with health and social care services, how these services are delivered by health professionals, and how they should be delivered to best meet people's health care needs. My specific interests include examining the provision of health care and advice as it occurs in situ as well as understanding the perspectives and experiences of people who give and receive health care. I have examined the provision of health care and advice in a range of contexts, including relationship-counselling helplines, health helplines, acute hospital care, and community services.
My current program of research focuses on fundamental nursing care. I lead international research projects designed to understand how the current global deficits in fundamental care can be overcome. Specific projects include testing and refining a conceptual fundamental care framework; developing a concise, robust definition for fundamental care; exploring, and designing interventions to improve, patients’ experiences of fundamental care in acute care settings (a joint project with researchers from Uppsala University, Sweden, is exploring how fundamental care is delivered in hospital for patients with acute abdominal pain); and developing metrics on the nurse-patient relationship, a key driver in the delivery of high-quality fundamental care. These projects will generate clear conceptual understanding and a robust evidence base for fundamental care that can underpin education, policy and practice.
My research skills include qualitative approaches, specifically Conversation Analysis, Discourse Analysis and Thematic Analysis; and scoping reviews. I am a member of the International Learning Collaborative (ILC), a member-based organisation dedicated to elevating the standard of fundamental care globally. Much of my work involves collaborations with ILC members from around the globe.
