Ms Poppi Doser
Higher Degree by Research Candidate
School of Biological Sciences
College of Sciences
I am a current Master of Philosophy (Environmental Science) candidate in the School of Biological Sciences. My research lies at the intersection of fire ecology, plants, and climate change. Since mid-2022, I have been investigating serotinous, fire-killed (fire sensitive), obligate seeding Banksia taxa, with a focus on species native to Kangaroo Island in South Australia. I am particularly interested in the traits that enable species and populations to persist in, and co-exist within fire-prone environments, and in assessing their vulnerability to local extinction under altered fire regimes driven by climate change and anthropogenic activities.
Prior to studying conservation ecology, I worked for many years as a practising artist and music researcher. An introduction to musique concrète led me to the discipline of acoustic ecology, or soundscape studies, as developed by practitioners including Bernie Krause, R. Murray Schafer, Barry Truax, and Hildegard Westerkamp. My work in this area—including hundreds of hours spent listening to natural and artificial environments, both in situ and through recordings—ultimately motivated me to undertake formal studies in wildlife conservation, with Krause's view that ecological health can be diagnosed through listening being particularly formative.
