Peter is Deputy Vice Chancellor Research & Enterprise at UniSA, and  will be the new Pro Vice Chancellor Research Translation at Adelaide University from January 2026, reflecting his experience in identifying, driving and supporting business development opportunities and translating research discoveries into real-world applications.
Peter’s own research encompasses the engineering of surfaces and extends to applications in the optical, automotive, aerospace, defence, mining and renewable energy industry sectors.
He has won more than $25 million of research grant funding and was awarded the 2016 ATSE Clunies Ross Award for Innovation for his work in the development of the world’s first plastic, external automotive rear-view mirror.
Prior to commencing work at UniSA in 2003, Peter spent 10 years as a research scientist working in private industry for SOLA International, at the time one of the world’s largest manufacturers of plastic ophthalmic and sun lenses. It was during this time that he developed his expertise in optical thin film coatings and designing surfaces for application in real-world environments.

Thin Film Coating Technology: including plasma polymerisation, sputter coating, electron beam evaporation, spray coating, dip coating, spin coating,Electromaterials : inclduing electrochromic materials based upon conducting polymer coatings of PEDOT / PMAS / PANI.,Surface Characterisation and Analysis : AFM, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDAX and EELS.,Industry engagement - what does it take to create a highly successful collaboration with private industry that generates both research and product outcomes.
