With a distinguished research career exceeding 50 years in cardiovascular health and nutrition, Peter is now Emeritus Professor of Clinical Nutrition in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle, an adjunct professor at both the University of Adelaide and the University of Southern Queensland and has had various appointments with the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia and Flinders University since 1976.

Peter has held significant research leadership roles as a Senior Principal Research Scientist in CSIRO’s Division of Human Nutrition and subsequently as both founder and Director of the following research centres: ARC Key Centre for Smart Foods (University of Wollongong, 1999-2002); Nutritional Physiology Research Centre (University of South Australia, 2003-2009); Centre for Metabolic Fitness (Australian Technology Network, 2005-2007); Clinical Nutrition Research Centre (University of Newcastle, 2012-2020). He sought to strengthen the evidence for health benefits of functional foods and nutraceuticals through collaborative partnerships with food and supplement manufacturers and attracted over $17 million in research support from both government and private sectors. He generated evidence underpinning patents and health claims in Europe and the USA and was commissioned by the NHMRC and FSANZ to advise on Nutrient Reference Values and health claim policies.

Peter has served on the Medical and Health Sciences Evaluation Committee of Excellence in Research for Australia (2015, 2018), as Chair of the TGA’s Advisory Committee for Complementary Medicines (2017-19), as founding Editor-in-Chief of Nutrients (2009-18) and as a consultant to many organisations including Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the Australian Food & Grocery Council and the Blackmores Institute.

A recognised authority on preventive health benefits of bioactive nutrients with over 300 publications and 12,000 citations, he is a Fellow of the Nutrition Society of Australia and Emeritus Fellow of the International Society of Hypertension.
