• Paul is a senior researcher at the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC), which is a business unit of the South Australian Water Corporation. Paul has won over $2 million in grant and consultancy funds and has considerable expertise in biotechnology and applied microbiology, with almost 20 years research experience in protozoan parasite systematics / genetics and environmental microbiology. Paul has broad research interests in water microbiology and the development of rapid methods for the detection of waterborne pathogens and problem-causing microorganisms. Paul’s work has introduced techniques such as fluorescent in situ hybridisation and real-time PCR into the SA Water testing laboratory and contributed to the NATA accreditation of analyses using these technologies. Paul has particular expertise in the development of diagnostic assays for pathogens and nuisance microorganisms using real-time PCR and complex DNA melting curves. Paul’s research expertise has been internationally recognised by invitations to speak at three International Giardia and Cryptosporidium conferences (2004 Amsterdam, Netherlands; 2007 Morelia, Mexico; 2009 Orvieto, Italy), the Eighth International Coccidiosis Conference (Cairns), the 2002 Australian Veterinary Conference Annual Conference (Adelaide) and the 2007 Discovery Science and Biotechnology Conference (Brisbane), as well as invited journal reviews on the application of molecular techniques for pathogen detection and identification. In addition to research expertise, Paul is experienced in maintaining instruments and computers and using various software packages in the Windows, Linux and Apple operating systems for data analysis (sequence assembly & annotation, primer design, phylogenetic analysis, whole genome comparisons etc.)
