Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD (as Co-Supervisor) - email supervisor to discuss availability.

Paul was awarded his PhD in 1997 for his work investigating the molecular systematics of Giardia, which was conducted at the University of Adelaide. In 1998 Paul joined the South Australian Water Corporation as a Research Microbiologist based at the Australian Water Quality Centre. In this position he was responsible for the development of rapid methods for the isolation and identification of Cryptosporidium and Giardia from water. Paul was appointed as the Research Leader of Microbiology in August 2002 and manages the Microbiology Research and Development Group. Paul's experience includes project management, molecular diagnostics, gene technology and evolutionary biology.
Current research projects include the investigation of the survival of Cryptosporidium in environmental waters, the development of field tests for the genetic detection of toxic cyanobacteria, the development of biosensors for taste and odour compounds and the identification of novel indicators for pathogens in waste water

Application of rapid detection technologies (real-time PCR, biosensors) for the detection of microbial contaminants in water

Characterisation of the physical processes involved in the inactivation of pathogens in the environment

Identification of novel indicator organisms for pathogens in waste water

Laboratory and field-based evaluation of disinfection technologies for the inactivation of microorganisms of concern to the water industry
