Nicole's researches the history of cross-cultural contact, colonialism and theories about human diversity particularly in France and Oceania. She teaches in the undergraduate programme in History and provides an upper-level course on Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. Nicole is also an Honourary Associate Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, a Barbara Kidman Fellow (2016), and Research Associate on an ARC Discovery Project entitled 'Revolutionary Voyaging: Science, Politics and Discovery During the French Revolution,1789-1804'.
