Excerpt from article by Dr Peter Sharley in the July 2016 edition of 'MedicSA' magazine
"Ned’s elite rowing career began at the Adelaide University Boat Club while he was at medical school. Many years on the river took him to four Under 23 World Championships, and then in 2013 the Open Rowing World Championships in South Korea, where he competed in the Australian Men’s Eight.
.
“I have always felt that sport and study complement each other. When I was tired from rowing, I could take a rest and study, and when sick of study, I could clear my head and get some fresh air training. Having two strengths helps your confidence, and each improves your perspective on the other. “Don’t neglect your studies, talk early with your medical school and be open about your intent. While unaware of the Australian figures, more than 100 US Olympians have been doctors, so it is very doable. I read recently how Olympic medallist American diver Abby Johnston spread out her medical studies to create time, a tactic I also employed when stretching six years of medical school into seven. Of course specialist training poses different challenges again. So ‘do it and do it now’!”
