Natalie Worth is an experienced Clinical Psychologist who is also trained and certified with ARCH (Arenas for Change) to deliver Psychology in an Equine/Animal Environment. She has worked with children and adults for over 25 years and had a focus on trauma recovery, with her M.Psychology and early career work onwards being focused on recovery of key relationships after leaving a traumatic background.
In her research in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences she brings this background experience and knowledge to a topic that is important and timely for our Veterinary Professionals. Does psychological trauma or PTSD exist for Veterinary Professionals and if so what is it related to, is it work-related or other related, and most importantly what can be done about it?
Natalie provides one to one office based psychology, psychology in an equine environment, psychology in an animal environment and psychology outdoors. She also supervises other professionals around their work with other humans and is interested in supervising veterinary and animal professionals around the part of their work that is with humans and can be challenging.
Natalie is supervised by Professor Michelle McArthur, Professor Sam Franklin and Assoc Prof Susan Hazel.
Veterinary Professionals' Experiences of Trauma at Work
We know that veterinary professionals experience lots of work stressors and sometimes struggle with mental health. There has been a degree of research into these stressors and struggles, however to date there has not been Australian research into whether or not this population experiences trauma or PTSD symptoms related to work and stressors of the profession. A survey measuring various mental health symptoms was circulated and 354 participants took part. The results have been analysed and are being written up. The VetEd conference in Bristol in July have approved an abstract for presentation.
