Naomi completed her PhD in neuropathology at The University of Adelaide (2010), investigating the role of neuropeptides and magnesium transporters in acute and chronic neurological diseases. She subsequently worked as a postdoctoral research officer at the Heart Research Institute in Sydney, characterising protein and enzyme damage mediated by myeloperoxidase-derived oxidants. She also worked at QIMR in Brisbane on a molecular biology-based project into cystic fibrosis liver disease, prior to taking up a position in functional genomics research into metabolic diseases at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Naomi joined the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Group at the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research in late 2018 to assist with research projects investigating the role of the microbiome in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and exploring diet and faecal microbial transplantation as potential treatment strategies.
