Monique Smith is a PhD candidate studying restoration ecology with a particular focus on restoring abandoned farmland (old-fields) back into native grasslands or grassy woodlands.

I am interested in combining applied and mechanistic understanding of restoration techniques to provide information to guide restoration practises. In particular, my PhD uses both glasshouse and field trials to dig a bit deeper into common practices for restoring abandoned farmland back into native grasslands.

My broad questions are:

What are the best techniques for preparing a site for planting that can change environmental conditions to favour native grasses over invasive grasses?
What role does soil microbial communities play in restoration?
How can we plant native grasses so that they are resilient to future weed invasions?
