Dr Mithun Varghese is a fellowship trained cardiologist specializing in interventional cardiology. His special interests include all aspects of coronary intervention especially the use of intra-coronary imaging to achieve precise results during angioplasty. A true believer of the idea ‘prevention is better than cure’, he is passionate about helping patients in preventing the complications of heart diseases. Mithun has a public appointment as consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Lyell McEwin hospital. He also provides private consultation services at multiple locations in the northern suburbs of Adelaide and at Gawler. In a concurrent academic role, he also serves as a clinical lecturer with the University of Adelaide.

Academic Experience

Teaching of postgraduates and fellows

2012 till date: Post- graduate theory teaching

  • Didactic lectures 5 to 8 hours per year for 15 to 20 trainees
  • Moderating daily academic session (average 4-5 hours per week, attended by 20 trainees). This involves seminars, journal clubs, cath teaching session, echo teaching session etc.
  • Cardiology clinics for advanced trainees in preparation for cardiology exit exam (average nine sessions of 1-2 hours’ duration
  • I was overall in-charge of academic sessions during the year 2015 as well as in 2019. This includes rostering and selection of topics for presentation for the trainees

2012 till date: Post- graduate practical training

  • Training of advanced trainees rotating in the cathlab on various aspects of diagnostic cardiac evaluation including right and left heart catheterization, coronary angiography, ventriculography and cardiac hemodynamics (4 cath days a week)

2015 and 2019-20: Fellow training

  • Training of fellowship trainees/junior cardiology consultants on various aspects of coronary intervention (4 cath days a week).

  • Approximately 12 cardiology clinics per year for 3rd year medical students

  • Didactic lectures for students of BSc Cardiac Technology and Diploma cardiac technology, 4 to 6 hours per year for batches of 12-15 students
