Michael Larkin is a Kokatha man, with over twenty years’ experience in Aboriginal health and related fields across State Government health, tertiary education and research, and over ten years in the Aboriginal community controlled health sector. He is currently employed as Senior Lecturer – Indigenous Health within the Adelaide Medical School (University of Adelaide). His qualifications include; Cert. III Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, Cert. IV Training and Assessment, Bachelor of Justice and Society, and Master of Public Health. He is also currently undertaking a PhD (part-time) exploring strategies to improve access and uptake of hepatitis B care within Aboriginal communities. Previously, Michael was the Manager of Public Health and Primary Health Care Programs at the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (AHCSA), overseeing a number of state-wide programs and port-folio areas. During this time he was the co-lead for the development of the ‘Stop the Spread – Stay Strong’ campaign, targeting COVID-19 awareness building in Aboriginal communities. Michael has a strong interest in Aboriginal health research and ethics, teaching and speaking both locally and nationally, and advising HRECs on appropriate processes for ethical review of Indigenous research. Michael has been a member of the South Australian Aboriginal Health Research Ethics Committee (AHREC) since 2015 and held the role of AHREC Co-chair since 2019.
My current research includes enrollment in a PhD with a focus on improving access and engagement in care for the management of chronic hepatitis B in Aboriginal communities. I am adopting a mixed methods approach, undertaking three studies drawing upon both quantitative and qualitative methods. I am participating as either a chief investigator or associated investigator on a number of studies which all focus on improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities. These studies cover areas such as anti-racism education, liver disease and cancer prevention, kidney disease health promotion, oral health, and identifying the capabilities and capacity building needs of the health and medical research sector in SA in responding to Aboriginal informed research priorities and ethical research practice.
