I am passionate about the interface between research and improved decision making for sustainable water resource management. My research at the University of Adelaide focuses on the development, improvement and application of methods in the fields of hydrology, hydraulics, environmental science and computer science.
I also have a role with the South Australian Department for Environment and Water to translate of these research outputs into decision making for water management, with a focus on issues related to the River Murray.

The focus of my research has been the development and application of improved techniques for making optimal decisions about the management of water resources when faced with scarcity, uncertain information and competing demands. This requires a multidisciplinary approach, often working in teams, and I have published in journals in categories including computer science, civil engineering, water resources, environmental science and freshwater biology. There is an important link across these categories, where I have developed and applied innovations in computer science to hydrological or hydraulic applications, where results are then evaluated for their benefit or impact to the freshwater environment.
Tools that I have been involved in the development of include:
- a website with benchmark data sets and metrics for Input Variable Selection for machine learning.
- a website for produce probabilistic predictions to represent uncertainty in hydrological models.
- a R package to download and analyse SILO climate data.
