I'm a plant biologist focused on improving native plant performance in restoration contexts, with a background in native seed biology, seed enhancement technologies, and plant–microbe interactions. My work is primarily experimental, combining glasshouse and field trials with laboratory analyses to understand how these factors influence germination, growth, and survival in degraded environments. Alongside my research, I have experience teaching undergraduate biology, including practical classes, field and laboratory sessions, and student assessment.
My PhD at Macquarie University examined how seed- and root-associated microbial communities influence native grass performance, and explored probiotic and prebiotic interventions to improve revegetation outcomes. This work showed that seed sourcing and storage practices can substantially alter seed-associated microbial communities, and that reintroducing bacteria from fresh seed could improve germination in stored lots, with host-specific responses pointing to complex underlying interactions. A complementary line of work demonstrated an operationally simple approach to enhance the rhizosphere microbiome, showing that a single nursery-stage application of a soil biostimulant increased microbial activity and improved tubestock outplanting survival, growth, and cover in degraded soils.
I have also contributed to the research and development of other seed enhancement technologies, including specialised seed pellets for delivery via UAVs, and to broader work on conservation risk assessment for Australian plants.
Currently, I am beginning work at Adelaide University investigating how hotter, drier conditions affect the performance of seeds of threatened South Australian species.
