Dr Michael Evans
Research Associate
School of Mechanical Engineering
Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences
Dr Michael Evans is a Research Associate in the School of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Adelaide, having completed his Ph.D. (with a Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence) in 2017 and Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Aerospace) and Bachelor of Science (Theoretical and Experimental Physics) with 1st class Honours in 2013. Michael's Ph.D. research focussed on the differences in, and transition between, conventional and MILD (moderate or intense low oxygen dilution) combustion. Michael's research is undertaken using experimental laser diagnostics and numerical simulations on cluster computing systems. Michael has complemented his work at the University of Adelaide with research visits to the Politecnico di Milano in Italy and Stanford University in the United States of America. Michael won an Endeavour Postgraduate Award in 2015 to fund the latter of these trips - one of only two successful engineering applicants nation-wide. Michael's current research interests are focussed on both the combustion of liquid fuels and the extension of his Ph.D. work.
Outside of the university environment, Michael has over ten years experience teaching swimming in paid and volunteer capacities. He has worked as both an instructor and instructor-in-charge for a private swim-school, a disability support organisation, a Royal Life Saving Society (SA) volunteer programme and the annual VACSWIM programme. Between 2010 and 2015, in addition to working for a private swim-school, Michael worked as a swimming instructor and pool lifeguard in programmes tailored for adults with intellectual disabilities.
