Research
Dr Lynette Washington is an early career Research Fellow in the School of Management at Adelaide University. She is a qualitative researcher with a particular interest in understanding context and power. The overarching principle behind Lynette’s work is to undertake research that supports communities to be socially, economically, and environmentally safe, vibrant, and inclusive.
 
Lynette’s areas of research interest include: urban and regional development, transport, clean energy transformation, leadership, and gender. Lynette’s research has been published in A and A* ranked international and Australian journals. Additionally, she has co-authored numerous industry reports and has been published in The Conversation. Lynette has presented her research at numerous international and Australian conferences.
 
In 2024 Lynette was presented with two University of South Australia Staff Excellence Awards: the Research Commendation Award, and the One Team (Research) Award.
 
Lynette is currently working on several projects, including Energy Masters (RACE for 2030), Plugged In: Understanding Consumer Behaviour and Market Pathways for V2G in South Australia (RAA and IMove Australia), Encouraging Greater Use of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (National Road Safety Action Grants Program), Women in Construction (Construction Industry Training Board), and several Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) projects.
 
Teaching
Lynette is an experienced lecturer, with over eight years' teaching experience. She has taught organisational, written and interpersonal communication, media, ethics and diversity, research skills, study skills, literacy and creative writing. Her teaching career has spanned the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and TafeSA and has included curriculum development, delivery and assessment, and course co-ordination. Lynette is experienced in teaching face-to-face, online, and using hybrid delivery methods.
 
Education
Lynette holds a Doctorate of Philosophy (Creative Writing) from the University of Adelaide. Her undergraduate studies include Bachelor of Arts Communication Studies (Honours) from the University of South Australia and Advanced Diploma in Professional Writing from TafeSA.
 
Early Career
Before entering academia, Lynette worked as a professional and technical writer and editor for approximately 20 years. This role spanned several industries including banking, health, the university sector, and information technology. In these roles, Lynette enjoyed being able to take complex and detailed information and transform it into clear and concise policy, procedure and training material.
 
Lynette has also worked in trade publishing, both at MidnightSun Publishing, and at the small independent publisher that she founded and directed, Glimmer Press. In these roles Lynette found great enjoyment and satisfaction in working with emerging and established writers to support their creative and publishing goals.  
 
Creative
Lynette’s PhD thesis included the creative work, Plane Tree Drive, a short story cycle which was subsequently published by MidnightSun Publishing. Plane Tree Drive went on to be Highly Commended in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and Shortlisted for the MUBA. She has had numerous short stories published and has edited several collections of short stories.
