Mr Lloyd Van't Hoff
Lecturer
Elder Conservatorium of Music and School of Performing Arts
College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities
Lloyd Van’t Hoff is an internationally recognised Australian clarinettist, chamber musician, educator, and artistic director. Born in Darwin, Australia, he came to national prominence as the Grand Prize and Sir Charles Moses Trophy winner in the Symphony Australia ABC Young Performers Awards. He has since performed widely as a concerto soloist and chamber musician, appearing at major venues and festivals in Australia and internationally.
A committed advocate for chamber music and new work, Lloyd is a founding member of the award-winning Australian wind quintet Arcadia Winds, commissioning and premiering works by leading Australian composers. He is also co-founder of Crux Duo, with whom he explores a wide-ranging repertoire from core classics to contemporary commissions, including recordings released on the ABC Classic label.
Lloyd is an academic at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Adelaide University, where he is Head of Woodwind and Lecturer in Clarinet. During his time at the Conservatorium he has also served as Coordinator for Chamber Music, Director of the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra, Director of the Elder Music Lab, and Artistic Director of Ensemble Lumen, the Conservatorium’s in-house staff chamber music ensemble. In these roles, he contributes to the artistic, pedagogical, and strategic direction of ensemble performance and creative practice across the institution.
His academic and artistic interests include contemporary performance practice, chamber music collaboration, composer–performer dialogue, repertoire development for clarinet and winds, interdisciplinary and technology-enabled performance, and practice-led research. Alongside his university role, Lloyd is an active teacher and mentor, regularly presenting masterclasses and workshops in Australia and internationally, and continues to maintain a significant performance and recording career.
My research is grounded in practice-led performance, focusing on how new musical knowledge is generated through collaboration, curation, and world premiere performance. Centred on contemporary and newly commissioned repertoire, my work explores composer–performer dialogue, the expansion of clarinet and chamber music repertoire, and the activation of new instrumental formats. Through performances ranging from major concert venues to regional and community settings, this research demonstrates how artistic practice can both extend the contemporary canon and create meaningful cultural exchange beyond metropolitan centres.
