Research Officer
School of Public Health
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
Dr. Lemma Bulto is a researcher in the School of Public Health, within the Health Evidence Synthesis, Recommendations, and Impact (HESRI) Unit. He completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide, where he received the Doctoral Research Medal and the Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. He then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at Flinders University, where he was recognised with the Vice-President and Executive Dean Award (2023) and the Vice-Chancellor’s Early Career Researcher Award (2024). Dr Bulto is ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide (Stanford University 2025).
Dr Bulto has published over 55 peer-reviewed research articles, the majority of which were published after completing his PhD. Since then, he has authored more than 30 research outputs, including over 10 first-author papers, with an average FWCI of 8.58 in Scopus. His research outputs have informed several policy and practice guidelines, including those developed by the World Health Organization.
Dr. Bulto’s research centres on evidence-based cardiovascular disease prevention, with a focus on developing and evaluating innovative prevention strategies and models of care. His interests also include evidence informed healthcare, intervention reviews, the GRADE approach to assessing certainty of evidence, and guideline development methodology. With extensive expertise in evidence synthesis and a commitment to evidence-based healthcare, Dr. Bulto joined the HESRI unit to work on Australian Motor Neuron Disease (ALS/MND) guideline development project. He is a member of the Adelaide GRADE Centre, a certified Guideline Panel Member (McMaster University, Canada), and since 2023 has served on the South Australia Cardiovascular Research Network (SA CVRN) Rising Stars Working Group.
