Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD - email supervisor to discuss availability.
Dr Kylie Johnston is an Associate Professor in Respiratory Physiotherapy in the Allied Health and Human Performance Unit, University of South Australia. Kylie's research, teaching, supervision and industry engagement are focussed on cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice. Prior to academic appointment, Kylie had over 20 years of clinical experience in diverse fields of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, from adult and paediatric intensive care units to rehabilitation in chronic lung conditions. Her PhD was awarded by Curtin University.
Appointed to UniSA in 2011, Kylie was awarded an NHMRC Translating Research Into Practice Fellowship in 2011-12 and a Churchill Fellowship in 2016-17. Kylie's research reflects her clinical focus on real-life issues for people with lung conditions: implementation of pulmonary rehabilitation; keeping active and mobile; improving care between hospital and home; managing the troubling symptom of breathlessness. This work is facilitated locally by her active research partnerships with physiotherapy and respiratory medicine clinicians in Central, Northern and Southern Adelaide Local Health Networks.
Kylie is recognised as a clear, engaging, passionate and approachable educator in Acute Care Physiotherapy at undergraduate and post-graduate levels and as a clinician-researcher mentor. She is a supportive supervisor of Masters by Research and PhD students and welcomes new opportunities to supervise research in her fields of interest and expertise.
Kylie is an active member of Lung Foundation Australia, the Australian Physiotherapy Association, the Thoracic Society of Australia and NZ and is a reviewer for multiple top tier respiratory medicine journals. Complimenting her teaching and research, Kylie also works one day a week in clinical practice with people with respiratory and cardiac conditions and problems such as breathing difficulty.
In 2019-20 I led the project Translating Evidence-based Chronic Breathlessness Intervention Services to South Australia, which received funding through approved disbursements from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Rapid Applied Research Translation Program, as part of the work being undertaken by Health Translation SA.
I am delighted to have been awarded a Churchill Fellowship by The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust for travel to the UK and Canada in 2017 to research new methods to manage chronic breathlessness using non-drug interventions.
