Karen Peres qualified as a dentist in 1985 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 1998, she received her Master in Paediatric Dentistry from Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and also in Public Health from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She has a PhD in Public Health (Epidemiology) from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, after spending one year at University College London (UK). In 2006, she joined the Department of Public Health at UFSC, Brazil and during this period was engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision of more than 30 Honours, Master and PhD students. Karen also spent three months at the University of Otago in 2008–2009 to exchange professional experiences. She worked as one of the coordinators for the National Oral Health Survey carried out in 2010, Brazil. Karen has been involved in the coordination of the oral health studies nested in the Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort studies. In 2012, Karen Peres was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health, Adelaide Dental School at The University of Adelaide, Australia. Associate Professor Peres plays a key role in ARCPOH as the Director of the Dental Practice Education and Research Unit (DPERU), a joint venture between The University of Adelaide and Colgate Oral Care. She has been a member of the South Pacific Child Oral Health Task force since September 2014, and a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Australian Dental Research Foundation Inc. since February 2015. Karen is a reviewer for a range of scientific journals and has been an associate editor for the BMC Oral Health since 2014. She has published more than 100 papers in peer review journals and her work has received more than 4,500 citations and H index of 42 (Google Scholar). She has presented her research in scientific conferences worldwide such as Australia, Brazil, Uruguay, Thailand, China, and USA. Her main research interests are in the epidemiology of oral diseases, particularly in social inequality in oral health and life course.
