Kailin Xue is a PhD candidate at Adelaide University with an academic background in mathematics and education. She holds a Bachelor of Mathematics and a Master of Teaching (Secondary).
Her doctoral research focuses on exploring mechanisms for providing solar energy to households without roof access, with the aim of improving access to renewable energy and supporting more sustainable energy systems.
Her previous Honours research, conducted as part of the Energy Masters project, investigated household electricity demand flexibility using real-world energy consumption data. The research examined how household energy technologies and consumption patterns influence electricity costs, carbon emissions, and grid stability.
Her research interests include applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, data analytics, optimisation, and renewable energy systems. She has also contributed to research on dynamic analysis and optimal control, co-authoring a paper published in Frontiers in Physics in 2023.
My doctoral research investigates mechanisms for enabling households without access to suitable rooftop space, particularly renters and apartment residents, to benefit from solar energy.
The research explores alternative approaches to solar energy access, including community solar, shared photovoltaic systems in apartment buildings, balcony solar, landlord–tenant solar arrangements, and electricity pricing mechanisms that encourage daytime energy consumption.
Using detailed household electricity consumption data from the Energy Masters project, the research aims to develop analytical methods to evaluate these options, design affordable electricity plans for renters, and identify strategies to increase solar energy adoption.
A key focus is on assessing the economic benefits and fairness of different energy-sharing and cost-allocation mechanisms, with the broader goal of improving access to renewable energy and supporting a more sustainable and inclusive energy system.
