College of Health
Dr. Ariyaratnam is an academic cardiologist and electrophysiologist based at the University of Adelaide. Dr. Ariyaratnam completed his medical degree at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. He subsequently completed combined academic and clinical training in core medicine and cardiology as part of the prestigious NIHR clinical-academic training programme. He then completed subspecialty training and PhD in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital under the supervision of Professor Prash Sanders. Dr. Ariyaratnam's research encompasses all aspects of heart rhythm disorders and cardiac implantable devices. He has developed expertise in the relationship between atrial fibrillation and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and is leading several studies investigating this. In addition, Dr. Ariyaratnam has co-led two randomised clinical trials investigating the management of atrial fibrillation, including the CS-ROOF RCT and the CAAN-AF RCT. Dr. Ariyaratnam has been awarded several national and international awards for his research including the Heart Rhythm Society Young Investigator Award (2024), the University of Adelaide Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence (2024) the American Heart Association Samuel A. Levine Early Career Research Award (Finalist, 2022), the CSANZ Ralph Reader Clinical Science Prize (Finalist, 2022) and the Central Adelaide Local Health Network Nimmo Prize for Full-TIme Research (2022).
