Heatwaves kill more people than all other natural hazards combined. I have developed a new heatwave intensity metric that is tailored to the local history (long and short term) of daily temperature (average of maximum and minimum). Points Over Threshold (EVT) methodology has been used to assign severity classifications that are unique to each location's history of heatwave intensity. Dose/response evaluation of heatwave severity have shown promising signs across human health, agriculture, infrastructure and utilities. Soil dryness is being evaluated as one of the drivers of rising heatwave severity.
