Dr Jean M Winter - Postdoctoral Research Officer, Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories, Adelaide University - 2017

Dr Winter is an early career postdoctoral fellow with approximately seven years’ cancer research experience since commencing her PhD in 2010, with 12 peer-reviewed manuscripts over that time, 4 of these as first author. Her PhD work, which was undertaken from 2010-2015 under the guidance of Prof Graeme Young at Flinders University, established the first evidence in humans of pro-mutagenic O6-methyl-guanine DNA adducts forming within colorectal cells after consumption of a high red meat diet. This work was referenced by the World Health Organization in 2015 as being evidence for a mechanistic link between consumption of red meat and colorectal cancer. Following her PhD, Dr Winter obtained a postdoctoral fellowship at the leading research establishment The National Institutes of Health (NIH) USA for 2 years (2015-2017), training in modern pre-clinical and wet laboratory techniques such as next generation sequencing, CRISPR/Cas9 knockdown and RNA-seq. This time at the NIH garnered her a first author manuscript in the high impact journal Cell Systems that identified novel genes involved in modifying risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. Dr Winter's work within the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories, under the guidance of Prof Tilly, will focus on developing novel therapeutic strategies in breast and prostate cancer. Her work will form the basis of a large collaborative grant funded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Movember Foundation to transform endocrine therapy for men and women suffering from endocrine resistant disease.
