Dr Jane Harford joined the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH) at the University of Adelaide in early 2003. She has a background in public health, health policy and health economics. Her research interests include the impact of population ageing on oral public health and on the provision of oral health care, strengthening a public health/primary care approach to oral health, the impact of various funding arrangements including government subsidies on oral health service delivery and status, and the role of food policy in oral health. Her roles at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health include reporting on the measures of oral health and access to dental care from the National Telephone Interview Survey and co-ordinating ARCPOH's contribution to the revised Bachelor of Dental Surgery undergraduate program and the Master of Public Health Program. She has been a chief investigator on the Intergenerational Change in Oral Health project, examining changes in oral health of older South Australians and the CHAMP Oral health project, examining oral health of older men. Jane is a Chief Investigator on the NHMRC Partnership Grant (APP1115649) entitled ‘Delivering effective dental healthcare in 2020–2030: A national longitudinal partnership study of burden of oral diseases in Australia’. She is a former Director of the AIHW Dental Statistic and Research Unit (2011-13) and the National Oral Health Promotion Clearinghouse (2105-16).

Dr Jane Harford occupies a position 0.4 FTE in the School of Dentistry to deliver teaching in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) programs. Dr Harford specialises in the areas of Population Oral Health and Ethics. She teaches in the following areas:
Jane delivers integrated class meetings on population health and ethics in the first year of the BDS and contributes to the development and maintenance of online learning material for evidence-based practice teaching in BDS1 (and BOH1) to support the School’s effort in developing blended modes of learning. Dr Harford coordinates the Community Dentistry component of the fourth and fifth year of the BDS. In the fifth year of of the BDS this has included development and maintence of a fully online suite of course materials. In addition to leading this teaching in first, fouth and fifth years, Dr Harford teaches tutorials in Evidence Based Practice components of first and second year as well as tutorials in the Social Context of Dentistry component of second year (BDS and BOH combined) Dr Harford has contributed to the School’s teaching effort as the BDS teaching staff member on the School’s Learning and Teaching Committee (2014-2015). In 2015, she also attended the Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee as a proxy for the Chair of the School Learning and Teaching Committee (S Karanicolas). Dr Harford also co-ordinates ARCPOH’s teaching of dental public health topics in the Population Oral Health specialisation of the Master of Public Health offered through the School of Public Health.
