Research highlight

Transverse Force Distributions in the Proton from Lattice QCD: (chosen as an Editor's Suggestion in Physical Review Letters)

Using advanced supercomputing simulations, we were able to map the spatial distribution of forces acting on quarks inside a proton, revealing new details about its internal structure. Using a technique called lattice quantum chromodynamics, which models the strong force on a grid of space-time points, we calculated how the force densities vary depending on both the position of the quark and the proton’s spin direction.

The study reveals a spin-independent force that reflects the confinement of quarks, with local forces reaching up to 3 billion electron volts per femtometre — about half a million Newtons, or the weight of roughly 10 elephants. A spin-dependent force has also been mapped, which offers new insights into how the dynamics of quarks are influenced by the spin of the proton in which they live.

By visualising these force distributions, this research offers an intuitive and elementary explanation of spin-dependent effects observed in experiments where electrons are scattered off protons. These findings contribute to understanding the quantum mechanics of the proton and pave the way for connecting theoretical models with data from future particle collider experiments.
