Dr Imre Kouw, BSc Dietetics and MSc Nutrition, is Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the RAH ICU Research Group. Imre completed her PhD in 2018 at Maastricht University under supervision of Professor Luc van Loon, which focussed on nutritional strategies to attenuate muscle loss during hospitalization in older and clinical populations. During her PhD, she gained extensive experience in stable isotope tracer methodology to assess muscle protein metabolism. She conducted multiple nutritional intervention trials in healthy older volunteers and clinical populations (patients with frailty, Type 2 Diabetes, elective hip or knee replacement, or hip fracture surgery and those prior to bariatric surgery). Imre has been awarded multiple research awards during her PhD including the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Best Oral Presentation (2016) and Gatorade Sport Science Institute (2016) Nutrition Award, and more recently a price for Best PhD Thesis 2019 in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (Dutch Nutrition Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism) and the British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Early Career Scientist Award (2020). Imre received an ESPEN Research Fellowship (2019) to investigate the effect of intermittent fasting on muscle protein metabolism in overweight and obese middle-aged men at the Exercise and Nutrition Research Program at Australian Catholic University in Melbourne and apply a novel tracer methodology, deuterated water. Imre recently joined the RAH ICU Research Group in July 2020 where she will continue her postdoctoral training on muscle protein metabolism in Intensive Care Unit patients, she recently received a prestigious Rubicon Fellowship (2020-2022) from the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development NOW/ZonMW. Imre has previous (co-)supervisory experience with BSc, MSc, and PhD students.
