Dr Ian Theodore G. Cabaluna is a pharmacist, physician and clinical epidemiologist undertaking a PhD at Adelaide University under the supervision of Professor Zachary Munn. His research focuses on advancing the science, classification and practical application of evidence synthesis methods, with particular interest in evidence synthesis taxonomies, research methodology and the development of trustworthy clinical practice guidelines.
Before commencing his PhD, Ian served as a Research Assistant Professor at the Institute of Clinical Epidemiology, National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila. He also held leadership responsibilities in capacity building and extension services, supporting the development of researchers, healthcare professionals and guideline development groups.
Ian has extensive experience in systematic reviews, evidence-based healthcare, the GRADE approach, guideline development and adaptation, and evidence-to-decision processes. He has contributed to national initiatives undertaken in collaboration with the Philippine Department of Health, PhilHealth and other healthcare decision-making bodies. His work has supported the development of clinical practice guidelines, evidence summaries, health technology assessments and recommendations intended to improve healthcare policy and practice.
His broader research interests include evidence synthesis methodology, clinical epidemiology, guideline implementation, health research capacity building and the use of evidence to support equitable health decision-making, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Ian is committed to strengthening the connection between rigorous research methods and real-world healthcare decisions. Through his doctoral research, he aims to help make evidence synthesis methods easier to understand, select, conduct and apply.
