Dr Huayang Zhang

Grant-Funded Researcher (A)

School of Chemical Engineering

Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology

Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD - email supervisor to discuss availability.

Dr Zhang’s research focuses on the rational design, synthesis and investigation of nanostructured photo- and photo- electrocatalysts for solar energy conversion, including photocatalytic H2 production and photo-electrocatalytic water splitting. Using his advanced knowledge on crystallography and surface chemistry and with expertise in advanced in situ characterisations and computations, he has helped pioneer low-dimensional nanomaterials, ranging from zero- dimensional quantum dots to three-dimensional porous carbons. He has made notable contributions to the large-scale production of biomass-derived functionalized carbon by introducing the innovative idea of utilizing the cheap sodium bicarbonate as the pore-forming reagent. In particular, Dr Zhang has shown great skill in conducting interdisciplinary research. He was one of the first to combine diverse artificial materials with bio-enzymes for photoelectrochemical application, which forms the basis of his research in UoA.
