Hoai Thu Bui is a PhD researcher in Applied Economics at Adelaide University. Her research interests lie at the intersection of development economics, environmental economics and international economics, with a particular focus on the socioeconomic impacts of climate change in developing countries.
 
Her current doctoral research examines how shocks, particularly natural disasters, affect socioeconomic outcomes at different levels including households' multidimensional energy poverty and local firms' global value chain participation. Her work comprises dealing with complex datasets including geographic and climate data, large-scale household survey data, firm level data and transaction-based custom data and applying contemporary causal-inference methods to identify the effects of environmental shocks. Her broader research interests include gender inequality, firm participation in global value chains, foreign direct investment and international economic integration.
 
Before commencing her PhD, Hoai Bui worked as a lecturer in international economics and trade at Nha Trang University, Vietnam, for ten years. She has also contributed to university- and government-funded research projects involving economic development and local firms' market penetration. Alongside her research, she teaches Data Analytics at the University of Adelaide and is committed to making quantitative methods accessible and relevant to students.
