Himangshu is a doctoral researcher at Adelaide University Law School. His research examines whether the criminalisation of ecocide can provide an effective legal response to environmental crime in Australia. Using a comparative approach, he analyses ecocide laws in jurisdictions where they have already been enacted to identify lessons for the Australian legal system. His research also investigates how these laws operate in practice, assessing their implementation, enforcement and effectiveness in preventing serious environmental harm. Through this work, he aims to contribute to the development of stronger environmental crime laws and more effective environmental governance in Australia. He is awarded the Adelaide University Research Scholarship (Project Based) for his research degree.
 
Himangshu has completed an LL.M. in Human Rights from the National Law University & Judicial Academy, Assam, India, along with a Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law & Policy from National Law University Delhi. He also holds a B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) in Constitutional Law and Political Science from Gauhati University, India where he graduated with first-class honors.
 
His research interests lie at the intersections of environmental law, human rights, international law, and animal law. Himangshu has presented his research at several conferences, including those organized by the University of California Berkeley Centre on Comparative Equality, the University of Southampton, and the University of Melbourne. He has published some of his work in the Oxford Human Rights Hub Blog, the LSE Human Rights Blog and SCOPUS-indexed journals.
 
Beyond research, Himangshu has actively participated in mooting, debating, and legal editing, currently serving as a Visiting Editor at the Trento Student Law Review in Italy.
