Dr Hans Bogaardt

Hans is a speech-pathologist and epidemiologist with a strong interest in swallowing disorders and neurocognitive communication disorders. Hans leads the Swallowing and Communication disorders across the lifespan Research Group at The University of Adelaide. He has authored >50 peer-reviewed publications in this area and has been a supervisor for PhD students since 2016. Under his supervision, 4 students have completed their PhD, next to over 20 Honours students. Hans has been presenting his work at many different conferences as an invited speaker around the world.

Swallowing disorders are not only associated with choking and malnutrition/dehydration, but also have a detrimental impact on quality of life. Swallowing disorders are frequently found in a range of underlying diagnoses, like stroke, head-and-neck cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, swallowing disorders can be found in neonates and a range of pediatric diagnoses. Hans's research focuses on the underlying physiologic processes that result in swallowing disorders. There is a strong focus on treatment and treatment efficacy. Our research aims to have better therapy outcomes for people with swallowing disorders, in a shorter time. The use of new technologies to support treatment is an essential part of current research. Next to this physiological approach, he is interested in the impact of swallowing disorders on quality of life particularly in multicultural populations.

Communication disorders, like voice problems, have an impact on quality of life and might lead to problems in participating in everyday life and the workforce. Hans's research focuses on underlying physiologic processes and the improvement of outcomes of therapy. Within his research, there is a special focus on communication disorders in neurogenerative diseases and neuropsychological aspects underlying communication problems.
