Professor Glenn Solomon is the inaugural Hicks Chair of Quantum Materials at the University of Adelaide. His research is at the interface of condensed matter physics and quantum optics, where he and his research group, and collaborators explore the interaction of light with semiconductor and superconducting materials, and utilize these interactions to develop devices, and proof-of-principle systems. At the University of Adelaide, he is in the Physics department and an active member of the Institute for Photonics and Sensing (IPAS). Glenn is also an adjunct fellow at the Joint Quantum Institute, located on the University of Maryland College Park campus, and an adjunct at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is a fellow of the Optical Society and the American Physical Society.
Professor Solomon’s research is predominately experimental based. His laboratories include two cleanroom facilities, one for epitaxial crystal growth, the other for device fabrication, as well as a quantum optics laboratory. Research topics include epitaxial crystal growth of semiconductor nanostructures, coupling them to optical cavities and waveguides, the development of semiconductor diode lasers and quantum light sources, time and frequency domain spectroscopy, quantum communications, light interactions with graphene in the integer quantum Hall regime, and the development of superconducting materials and devices for quantum light detection. He is interested in the societal and technological impact of quantum technologies, and contributing to building a quantum technology ecosystem in South Australia.
Glenn is leading the University of Adelaide’s Centre for Quantum Materials and Quantum Technologies, bringing together physicists, engineers, material scientists, and key strategic industry partners, including Silanna and DSTG to identify and provide solutions to variety of near- and long-term problems where quantum materials and quantum technologies can affect impactful change.

Professor Solomon's research interests include the interaction of light with semiconductor materials and devices. This research combines quantum optics techniques with semiconductor crystal growth and processing to investigate semiconductor quantum optics and quantum devices. His research includes the interaction of light with topological semiconductors, such as in the quantum Hall regime, and the growth and characterisation of superconducting materials, especially as photon detectors for integrated quantum optics. My breadth of expertise and experience is including but not limited to three primary areas:

3/Quantum Coherence

Professor Solomon is the director of the University of Adelaide Centre for Quantum Materials and Quantum Technologies, where the University of Adelaide is actively cultivating a cutting-edge Quantum Technologies ecosystem. He is also the leader in the development of quantum dot-based nanostructures for investigating fundamental physics and for applications in emerging quantum technologies. He is leading  Quantum Nanophotonics Group with a diversity of talented postdocs and high achieving HDR students. His group has a strong effort in high-power semiconductors lasers.
