Dr Emlyn Dodd

Emlyn Dodd is a Greek and Roman archaeologist and a leading expert in ancient Mediterranean agriculture, wine and olive oil. He currently directs fieldwork projects in Italy and Greece, including major international excavations at the Roman town of Falerii Novi in collaboration with the universities of London, Harvard, Toronto and the British School at Rome. He has published 4 books, most recently Methods in Ancient Wine Archaeology (2024) and Vine-growing and Winemaking in the Roman World (2025), and over 35 refereed journal articles and chapters. Emlyn's research has appeared across major print, tv and radio media, including on the ABC, BBC, National Geographic and in The Guardian, NBC News and The Washington Post. He also works with the modern wine industry, including winemakers and sommeliers, to show how the past is relevant to developments in practice today, and has evaluated World Heritage site nominations for the UNESCO advisory body, ICOMOS.
Dr Emlyn Dodd is Lecturer in Archaeology and Classical Studies at Adelaide University. He was previously Senior Lecturer in Classical Studies at the Institute of Classical Studies, University of London (2023-26), and Assistant Director for Archaeology at the British School at Rome (2021-23). He is a Greek and Roman archaeologist specialising in the study of ancient wine and oil, along with agriculture, technology and trade. Emlyn has published extensively on the production of wine and oil in antiquity, including the books Vine-growing and Winemaking in the Roman World (2025), Methods in Ancient Wine Archaeology (2024) and Roman and Late Antique Wine Production in the Eastern Mediterranean (2020) as well as recent articles in the American Journal of Archaeology and Antiquity. He has also appeared across radio and tv, including with National Geographic and the ABC and BBC, writes regularly for public-facing media, including several articles in The Conversation, and has featured in international media, including The Guardian, NBC News and The Washington Post.
Emlyn co-directs the Falerii Novi Project, which includes large-scale excavations at this Roman town in central Italy to investigate the sociocultural and economic life of this urban centre from the Middle Republic through to Late Antiquity. He also directs a survey project in the Cyclades (Greece), investigating agriculture and wine and oil production from the Classical to Late Antique eras. He is an active collaborator with the Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project (Gazipasa, Turkey) and has previously worked at Delos, the Athenian Agora and Acropolis (Greece); Pompeii, Oplontis, Matrice and in Sicily (Italy).
Emlyn was named Macquarie University's Early Career Researcher of the Year in 2023. He is Research Fellow at the British School at Rome, Associate Fellow at the Institute of Classical Studies (University of London), Honorary Fellow at Macquarie University, and Elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Society of Antiquaries London, and Higher Education Academy, UK. He has won competitive funding and awards from the British Academy, Leverhulme Foundation, Australian Academy of the Humanities, British School at Athens, Museum of Cycladic Art, and the Australasian Society for Classical Studies among others. As a leader in his field, he has been a member of the UK Research & Innovation Interdisciplinary Assessment College, London Arts & Humanities Partnership Subject Area Group for Archaeology, University of London Academic Board, has served as evaluator for numerous international and national funding agencies (NSF, ANR, NAWA, AHRC, FWF), and has evaluated World Heritage site nominations for the UN advisory International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

Dr Dodd has coordinated and taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses at a range of institutions in Australia, Europe and the UK across a variety of Mediterranean archaeology and ancient history topics. This includes Macquarie University (2015-23, 4 courses), Open Universities Australia (2015-17, 1 course), University of Padova (2023, 1 course), British School at Rome (2021-23, 1 course and 4 Doctoral Training Courses), and most recently the University of London (2023–26), where he taught Wine, Oil and Grain in Greece and Rome: Production to Consumption, ICS08 (PG seminar); Hands-on at the British Museum: Collections and Research in Practice, ICS09 (PG seminar); Ancient History Core Module: Sources and Methods in Ancient History, HIST0899/HIST0402 (PG seminar); Research Training in Classical Art and Archaeology, CL5091 (PG seminar).
At Adelaide University, Emlyn is involved in the design, coordination and teaching of the Archaeology and Classical Studies major. In 2026, he is convening The World of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, ARCY1001 and Myths of Ancient Egypt and Greece, ARCY2002.
Emlyn has held various leadership and service positions for teaching and learning, including as ICS Academic Coordinator for the London Intercollegiate MA (2025-26), on the Heads of Department Steering Committee for the London Intercollegiate MA in Classics (2025-26), and has chaired Periodic Program Reviews for undergraduate degrees at the University of London. Emlyn is passionate about HDR and ECR mentoring and development. From 2023-26, he coordinated the design and delivery of the UK's largest researcher training program in Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, reaching >3000 researchers nationally and internationally. He is an experienced supervisor and is available for postgraduate and HDR supervision in MRes and PhD programs.
