Emi is a PhD student at the Centre of Light for Life, under the primary supervision of Prof. Kishan Dholakia and co-supervision of Dr. Avinash Upadhya. Her research focuses on visualizing images in deep tissue and scattering media using patterned illumination, contributing to advancements in biomedical imaging and optical diagnostics.
She previously earned an Honours Degree in Bachelor of Science (High-Performance Computational Physics) from the University of Adelaide. Passionate about science communication and education, Emi actively promotes careers in science and optics, serving as the Outreach Officer for the Adelaide Optics Chapter committee.
Understanding and measuring biological processes at cellular levels in living subjects is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatments. One major challenge in optical imaging is visualising deep inside tissues while still getting clear, accurate images. To address this limitation, my project will use advanced techniques to improve how light is delivered and collected. This involves using carefully chosen wavelengths of light to penetrate deeper into tissues, along with special dyes and a highly sensitive photodetector. My project aims to answer pressing biological questions in fields such as neuroscience and embryology.
