My research centres around the interactions between cognition and emotion. Broadly, I aim to understand how everyday stressful events shape people's emotions, and ability to regulate their emotions. My research combines experimental and experience sampling methods, where people complete multiple smartphone surveys each day. I direct the Emotion, Memory, and Uncertainty lab (EMU lab) and practice open science.

I have three main lines of research:
1) Investigating emotional functioning during uncertain situations, like waiting for medical test results, exam grades, or the outcomes of court proceedings. People commonly face these kinds of uncertain situations. Yet, we know little about how to help people cope with the emotional difficulties that uncertainty poses. My research seeks to address this gap.

2) Investigating the role of disgust in memory and memory-related disorders (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder). Historically, PTSD has been understood as a fear-based disorder. But people commonly experience disgust during, and following, traumatic events, and research suggests disgust may be remembered better than fear. In this line of work, I seek to understand why disgust is remembered better than fear, and the clinical implications of disgust memory enhancement.

3) Investigating the effects of negative content exposure. In the digital age, people encounter content onlin more often than ever before. Some of this content is negative or graphic in nature. In this line of work, I seek to understand how often people are exposed to negative content in everyday life and the effects of negative content exposure. I also empirically test methods commonly used to emotionally prepare people for seeing negative content (e.g., trigger warnings) and ways to mitigate harm in populations repeatedly encountering negative content (i.e., online content moderators).
