Prof Diane Mather is the J.A.T. Mortlock Chair of Crop Improvement in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine. She and her group conduct molecular genetic research in crop plants, especially wheat and barley. She leads GRDC-supported research projects that aim to develop molecular markers for cereal breeding and to isolate cereal genes that confer resistance against parasitic nematodes. She oversees the molecular breeding operations of Durum Breeding Australia.

Professor Diane Mather

Prof Diane Mather is the J.A.T. Mortlock Chair of Crop Improvement in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine. She and her group conduct molecular genetic research in crop plants, especially wheat and barley. She leads GRDC-supported research projects that aim to develop molecular markers for cereal breeding and to isolate cereal genes that confer resistance against parasitic nematodes. My research investigates the genetic control of economically important traits in crop plants and develops molecular tools for plant breeding. Recently, we have made some significant advances on the resistance of wheat and barley against soil-borne parasitic nematodes and on several  grain quality traits. We are also working on resistance against fungal pathogens and exploring applications of molecular genetics in almond and other plant species. Our core strengths are in relating genotype to phenotype and in translating research results to outcomes that are useful for plant breeding.

Currently, we mainly use genotyping-by-sequencing to discover DNA polymorphisms and KASP technology to assay polymophisms. Our laboratory operates a complete SNPLine platform, so is very well-equipped for high-throughput assays of SNP and InDel polymorphisms. We do not offer service genotyping but we welcome proposals for collaborative research.

A fully funded scholarship is available for a highly qualified student to study for a jointly awarded PhD from the University of Adelaide (Australia) and Nottingham (England). You will be primarily based on the Waite Campus in Adelaide (Australia) or on the Sutton Bonington Campus in Nottingham (England) . You will conduct research at both locations. The CreR cereal cyst nematode resistance locus of rye: introgression into wheat and isolation of the causal gene
Supervision by Diane Mather (UA), Julie King (UN), Ian Dundas (UA) and Ian King (UN)

The CreR locus, which has been introgressed from rye into wheat, confers near-immunity to the cereal cyst nematode (CCN) Heterodera avenae. The objectives of this project are to: (1) estimate the position of CreR on rye chromosome 6R; (2) isolate the causal gene for CreR and determine how it confers resistance against CCN; (3) transfer CreR onto a small introgression segment for use in wheat breeding. In addressing these objectives, a PhD student will be trained in molecular cytogenetics (in Nottingham), molecular plant breeding (in Adelaide) and plant protection (in Adelaide). At both universities, the student will interact with others working on chromosome engineering of wheat. In Nottingham, the student will have the opportunity to do root imaging. In Adelaide, the student will interact with others working to isolate nematode resistance genes from cereals and to understand plant-nematode interactions. The student will use unique and complementary genetic resources developed at the two universities, with Adelaide near-isogenic lines providing the key for gene isolation and Nottingham wheat-rye introgression lines providing the key for transferring CreR onto a small introgression segment. Most of my research is funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). With support from GRDC, I lead a national molecular program that develops molecular markers for use in wheat and barley breeding and a research project aimed at isolating nematode resistance genes in wheat and barley and mapping nematode resistance loci in chickpea. I also oversee molecular breeding activities in the GRDC-funded Durum Breeding Australia program and I am an Associate Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Plant Cell Walls.

I coordinate postgraduate coursework programs in Plant Biotechnology and I contribute to teaching in the following courses:
