I am a Research Fellow in the College of Education, Behaviour and Social Sciences and the Education Futures Academy. The world isn’t a simple place, and the challenges we face are far ‘messier’ than we sometimes care to admit. That's what led me to complexity, systems thinking and Pragmatic Adaptive Leadership, which now underpin everything I do as a researcher.
Rather than specialising in a single area of education, I specialise in understanding how change happens within complex educational systems. I'm interested in why promising ideas succeed in some contexts but not others, how people and organisations adapt, and how research can be translated into meaningful and lasting improvement.
This perspective has shaped my methodological contribution to developing the Pragmatic Adaptive Leadership framework for research translation in complex contexts, where my work sits at the intersection of theory, methodology, and practice.
I enjoy collaborating with researchers from a wide range of disciplines because the concepts of designing for complexity are transdisciplinary. My collaborators bring deep expertise in their fields and domains, and I bring expertise in complex systems. Together, we can meaningfully translate research into sustainable practice and change.
My research contributes to Adelaide University's signature research themes of Personal and Societal Health and Sustainable Green Transition by addressing one of the central challenges common to both: enabling sustainable change in complex human systems. While advances in these areas rely on strong disciplinary knowledge, lasting impact depends on how evidence is translated into practice, how social groups adapt, and how people learn to work differently together. I develop the theory, methodology, and design principles needed to support this process.
I develop theory and methodology for understanding and designing change in complex educational systems. I use this expertise to translate research into meaningful and sustainable change across diverse contexts.
My research draws on complexity and systems thinking through the theoretical frameworks of Pragmatic Adaptive Leadership and Pragmatic Adaptive Modelling, which integrate Cultural-Historical Activity Theory with Contribution Analysis. I played a key role in the development of these frameworks and methodologies, contributing to new approaches for analysing activity systems, understanding systemic change, and designing adaptive interventions in education.
Working across interdisciplinary teams, I collaborate with domain experts to investigate diverse complex challenges. Some domains my work has translated into spans sustainability education, educational leadership, equity and inclusion, student and teacher wellbeing, early childhood mathematics, motivation and self-regulated learning, STEM education and equity, and game-based learning. My expertise lies in analysing the relationships, structures, and dynamics that shape these systems, enabling research teams to design interventions that are responsive to complexity and capable of producing lasting impact.
Methodologically, I employ mixed methods research, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches with activity systems analysis. My educational design work is systems-sensitive and futures-focused.
I am currently working on various research projects within the Education Futures Academy, including the Teaching Futures Pathway and the Careers Compass programme.
