Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD - email supervisor to discuss availability.
I am an applied entomologist with a focus on arthropod pest biology and ecology. My interests include spatial approaches to the study of arthropods (GIS, species distributions, dispersal), understanding major drivers of population change, and arthropod diversity in agricultural systems.
My role is a joint appointment between the University and the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), and I aim to build closer research ties between staff in each organization and assist in the growth of entomology as a science discipline. Currently I lead a Wine Australia project on scale insect pests of grapevines. This is a three-year project to clarify the identity and phenology of the major scale insect species. I collaborate with Dr Kate Muirhead of SARDI, Dr Kym Perry (UoA), Dr Michael Nash (independent consultant) and Dr Tom Heddle (UoA) on a GRDC-funded project on slug pests of grain crops. In this project we aim to better understand the biology of two common slug species and quantify the risk they pose in marginal area. I supervise Beck Stevens who is studying the effect of hail netting on the diversity of arthropods in apples for her PhD.
I started as a research technician at the University of Queensland working in cotton. Later I became a medical entomologist with the Department of Health in Darwin before completing a PhD on scarab pests of sugarcane at the University of Queensland. After more research on sugarcane scarabs with the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations, I moved to New Zealand to work on arthropod pests of kiwifruit and avocados with the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research.
I welcome enquiries from potential collaborators and students in all aspects of entomology.
