Mr Darren Taljaard
Lecturer
School of Humanities
Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics
I originally studied graphic design, hold a MA (media) and am currently a PhD candidate researching the impact of typographic design on reading from digital devices, particularly for those with dyslexia.
My research incorporates qualitative and quantitative methods, measuring the effects of typographic design on reading and comprehension. My research field is design, informed by methods and theory from cognitive psychology. I see design not only as an economic driver, but also as a powerful tool for social transformation. I considers visual communicators to be uniquely placed to help transform and enhance the presentation of information, making it more engaging, suitable and effective.
I have worked and studied in South Africa and Australia, as a creative director, designer and copywriter in advertising and design agencies and a lecturer in media and design.
