I am a PhD candidate with the Mesenchymal Stem Cells Research Group in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. In 2015, I completed my Bachelor of Sciences (Biotechnology). In 2016, I completed my Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours), where I received first class accreditation for my research in examining the role of an epigenetic enzyme in growth and differentiation of bone marrow-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells. Following graduation, I was offered a position as a research assistant with the Mesenchymal Stem Cells Research Group, where I assisted in the investigation of a novel drug therapy to treat craniosynostosis in children with Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome.

Currently, my PhD project is examining an epigenetic enzyme as a target to treat craniosynostosis in children with Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome, which combines my epigenetic interest with my previous working experience. I am conducting my PhD research under the supervision of Prof Stan Gronthos (Primary), Dr Esther Camp-Dotlic, Dr Dimitrios Cakouros and Prof Peter Anderson.

My research is focusing on identifying a novel target to treat a medical condition called craniosynostosis where fibrous joints or sutures, which normally separate the skull bones during childhood, fuse prematurely, leading to skeletal deformities and neurological deficits. Currently, the only treatment for craniosynostosis involves the removal of the affected sutures and remodeling of the skull, which could lead to serious complications. Thus, an attempt to identify a novel drug therapy that eliminates the use of invasive surgery is paramount. Specifically, my project is examining an epigenetic enzyme, called KDM6A, as a drug target to treat craniosynostosis in children with Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome (SCS).
