Emerita Professor Cherrie Galletly is a consultant psychiatrist working across the University, public mental health and private sectors. She was Interim Dean of the Adelaide Medical School 2020-2021, responsible for managing the MBBS program during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was awarded an OAM for her services to psychiatry, in 2022.

She held a Chair in Psychiatry, jointly funded by the University of Adelaide and Ramsay Health Care (SA) Mental Health, from 2007 until May 2022. She continues as a Regional Director of Postgraduate Psychiatry training (Northern Area Local Health Network).

She takes a collaborative approach to research, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of care for people with severe mental illness. Her research interests include schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; she was Northern Adelaide site director for the Second National Survey of Psychosis (2010) a landmark study of more than 1800 people with psychoses. She was a member of the NHMRC Mental Health Research Advisory Committee (MHRAC) 2017-2019.

She was a Chief Investigator on a study of comorbidity between mental health and substance abuse disorder based in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide. She heads up one of the leading national centres on neurostimulation treatments (rTMS and ECT) for psychiatric disorders.

She led the Writing Group for the RANZCP Clinical Practise Guidelines for Schizophrenia and Related Disorders. She was an Associate Editor for the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry (2011-2021) and a member of the Editorial Executive for Australian Prescriber (2011-2020).

She has worked with many early career researchers and clinicians to publish their first paper. She has supervised many HDR students including supervising seven PhDs to completion.

She has more than 300 publications in the peer reviewed literature, along with one book and 3 book chapters. Since 2011 she has been involved in 61 conference presentations. Her total collaborative research funding exceeds $30m.
