Chengjun Huang is a PhD candidate in the Department of Asian Studies and an interpreter/translator between English – Chinese (Mandarin). He holds a Master’s in Interpreting, Translation and Transcultural Communication from the University of Adelaide. His current research centres on the digital entertainment industry, with an emphasis on the localisation of video games between English and Chinese.
Games of localisation in the localisation of games: A case study of Suzerain
While many video game companies increasingly attempt to target the Chinese market, Chinese-speaking volunteer translators have been leading many game localisation projects and preparing many games for most prominent sector of the global digital entertainment industry. This industry-engaged PhD project examines the under-studied processes of volunteer game localisation and explores how they can be deeply integrated into a commercial project.
The research offers a unique insider perspective as the lead investigator serves both as project coordinator and lead translator of the localisation project for the video game Suzerain. Through this dual role and perspective, the study offers key insights into the experiences, challenges, and intricate power dynamics faced by volunteer translators, and assess the impact they may have on the processes and qualities of the translation product. Findings provide a more nuanced understanding of this practise-driven discipline, offering recommendations for future localisation efforts that will benefit both players and developers.
