People who live in cities are more alienated from nature than ever before. This has consequences for health, wellbeing and attitudes to wider environmental challenges. I explore how we may enrich cities with nature and build better relationships with it. To that end, I investigate what nature means to us in the urban context and apply research to identify the most strategic targets for creating more vibrant and diverse nature in cities. My thesis gathers insights from practitioners across a range of industries to formulate wholistic and practical recommendations. I envisage future cities that do far more than display aesthetic green infrastructure; I see cities becoming highly functional living systems. This vision requires a paradigm shift in our assumptions of what cities can be.
