Current PhD opportunity:
Professor Anna Chur-Hansen and I are seeking a suitable applicant for a PhD project focusing on rural and remote psychology education and training across Australia (aiming to commence in 2025).
The project will be, broadly, investigating the ‘rural pipeline’ in psychology education and training with a national focus. The focus on increasing rural practitioners through training pathways has been prominent in other disciplines such as medicine, and this project is an opportunity to explore these factors in psychology education and training.
This will include the experience of rural background students studying psychology and barriers and facilitators of the pathway to working as a psychologist in rural and remote areas. The project will provide an important contribution to inform strategies to improve access to psychology services in rural and remote areas and improve training opportunities.
This would be a qualitative or mixed methods project, and could include (for example)
- Qualitative studies of rural background psychology students exploring barriers and facilitators to psychology training (including transition to university)
- A quantitative survey following on from the above
- Qualitative study exploring rural and remote health/psychology practice content in psychology training programs
This builds on our previous work exploring the experiences of psychologists in providing rural and remote psychology services and rural and remote psychology supervision e.g.
