Dr Braam Lowies is a Senior Lecturer in Property at the University of South Australia. He holds a BCom (cum laude, 1994) and a BCom (Hons) in Banking (1995) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In 2007, he completed an MSc in Real Estate (cum laude) at the same institution, and in 2013 was awarded a PhD in Finance. In 2011, Dr Lowies qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and was admitted as a full professional member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).
Dr Lowies is an Associate of the Australian Property Institute (AAPI). He has previously served on the National Committee of the API’s Australian Property Research and Education Fund and currently serves on the RICS South Australian Member Engagement Group. He is a former Director of the UniSA Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) and currently serves as the Stream Director: Social Enterprise in the UniSA Centre for Markets, Values and Inclusion. He is also a member of the UniSA Business Negligible Risk Ethics Committee.
Dr Lowies commenced his academic career in 2000 as a lecturer in financial management following five years in the banking sector. He has also undertaken consultancy work for the New Zealand Government Property Management Centre of Expertise in Wellington. His contributions to research and engagement have been recognised through national and international academic scholarships, numerous peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and recent awards from both industry and UniSA for excellence in community and industry engagement.
Dr Lowies’ research focuses on behavioural issues in housing and finance, particularly financial capability among older adults in making housing, financial, and investment decisions. His broader research interests include intergenerational financial decision-making and emerging or disruptive property investment models.

AHURI funded a research project to model a filtering process for expanding affordable rental supply.
