College of Science

Dr Babar Shahzad is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine at Adelaide University. His research focuses on weed ecology, invasive plant biology, plant stress physiology, seed ecology, and sustainable agricultural systems. Through laboratory, glasshouse, and field-based research, he investigates the ecological and physiological mechanisms that influence plant adaptation, weed invasions, and sustainable management strategies under changing climatic conditions.Dr Shahzad has established an internationally recognised research profile, with more than 15,000 citations and an h-index of 33. His work has contributed significantly to advancing knowledge in plant stress biology, crop adaptation, and sustainable agriculture. He was recognised as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2023, and has been consistently ranked among the world's top 2% scientists based on standardised citation metrics. His current research focuses on weed ecology and management in Australian agricultural and natural ecosystems, including germination ecology, seedbank dynamics, invasive species biology, and integrated weed management strategies aimed at improving agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.

My research investigates the physiological, biochemical, and ecological mechanisms that enable plants to adapt and persist under diverse environmental conditions. Through integrated laboratory, glasshouse, and field-based approaches, I seek to improve our understanding of plant resilience to both abiotic and biotic stresses and to develop practical management solutions for sustainable agriculture.

My current research focuses on weed ecology and invasive plant management within Australian agricultural and natural ecosystems. This includes investigating seed germination ecology, weed establishment, environmental drivers of emergence, invasive species biology, and integrated weed management strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how environmental conditions influence weed persistence, spread, and management outcomes under changing climatic conditions.

My broader goal is to generate knowledge that supports sustainable crop production, effective weed management, biodiversity conservation, and evidence-based decision-making for agricultural and environmental systems.

My research has contributed to advancing knowledge in plant stress physiology, environmental stress adaptation, and sustainable crop production. Publications arising from this work have been extensively cited by researchers worldwide and have supported understanding of plant resilience under drought, salinity, heavy metal toxicity, and other environmental stress conditions. More recently, my research has expanded into weed ecology and invasive species management, with a focus on addressing emerging weed challenges affecting Australian agricultural systems.

I welcome opportunities to collaborate with researchers, industry partners, government agencies, and postgraduate students working in the areas of:

Weed ecology and management

Invasive plant biology

Seed ecology and germination biology

Herbicide research

Plant stress physiology

Sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation

Prospective Honours, Masters, and PhD students interested in these research areas are encouraged to make contact to discuss potential research opportunities.
