Babak Zolghadr-Asli is an Associate Lecturer at Adelaide University, working in the field of hydroinformatics. His research focuses on addressing complex water and environmental challenges through the integration of computational methods and artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on optimization, data mining, and machine learning.His work is primarily directed toward sustainable water resource management, including understanding and responding to the impacts of climate variability and change. He develops and applies hydroinformatics frameworks to support decision-making in water systems, with the aim of creating robust approaches that account for economic, environmental, and technical dimensions, contributing to a broader understanding of the climate–energy–water–food nexus.Babak has an established record of scholarly contributions, including authored and edited books as well as numerous peer-reviewed publications, reflecting his ongoing engagement with research at the intersection of engineering and data science.

Research Themes

  • Hydroinformatics and Digital Water Engineering

    Developing computational, data-driven, and AI-enabled approaches for understanding, modelling, and managing complex water systems. Research integrates hydrological modelling, optimisation, machine learning, and large language models to advance next-generation digital water engineering and support evidence-informed decision-making.

 

  • Sustainable Water Resources Management

    Developing systems-based approaches to advance sustainable water resources management under growing environmental and societal pressures. Research focuses on integrated water resources planning, water security, climate adaptation, drought resilience, and lake and watershed management, recognising the interconnected environmental, engineering, governance, and socio-economic dimensions of sustainable water management.

 

  • Environmental Risk and Adaptive Governance

    Advancing risk-informed approaches for understanding and managing environmental systems under uncertainty. Research focuses on natural hazard risk assessment, climate adaptation, environmental governance, and risk tolerance to support adaptive, resilient, and evidence-informed decision-making in complex environmental systems.

    Contributed to the CSIRO-led Enhanced Resilient Asset Delivery (ERAD) programme by applying and refining climate risk assessment approaches, adaptation pathways, and governance frameworks to support resilient transport infrastructure and evidence-informed decision-making for local government. Collaborated with researchers, industry partners, and local councils to undertake climate risk analyses, prepare technical reports, and translate research into practical guidance for infrastructure planning, resilience, and adaptive risk governance. Contributed to stakeholder and public engagement activities to communicate research outcomes and support knowledge exchange across academia, industry, government, and the broader community.
