Athul is a graduate of the Adelaide Medical School and is currently completing his Doctor of Philosophy in Prostate cancer at the University of Adelaide supervised by A/Prof. Michael O Callaghan, A/Prof Luke Selth and Dr. Rick Catterwell. His project focuses on pathological parameters of men with positive surgical margins after radical prostatectomy with the aim of better identifying cancer progression in this group.

He also works as a Urology registrar at the Flinders Medical centre. He holds a Clinical Lecturer appointment in the Discipline of Surgery, University of Adelaide.
